Here’s Why People Are Pissed About Melania Trump’s RNC Speech

The Republican National Convention kicked off last night and it’s getting more attention for its negatives than its positives. One of these negatives happens to be Melania Trump’s speech she gave in support of her husband, Donald Trump’s, run for the presidency. Though the speech is supposed to be patriotic and supportive of her husband, it eerily mirrors the speech given by First Lady Michelle Obama at the 2008 Democratic Convention.

When you listen to the speeches side-by-side or read the transcripts side-by-side, it’s no question that plagiarism is at hand. Poor Melania is receiving the short end of the stick in this deal, being blamed–herself–for plagiarism, when we all know it’s at the fault of the speech writer.

However, this does not reflect nicely on the Trump campaign.

When first viewing the video, my thought was, “Okay, how in the Hell are people still supporting him as a serious presidential candidate?” With this plagiarized speech sweeping through the media, I could only imagine Trump and his campaign team–a possible future White House administration–as the high schoolers too lazy to write their own four-paged, double-spaced essays. This brings to light one thing: yes, Trump is a racist, a sexist, a liar–but now he’s just plain dumb.

Trump and his campaign team are dumb enough not to double-check their speeches to make sure they’re not plagiarized, or–worse–they’re actually dumb enough to actually plagiarize a speech, and think they can get away with it. How does this reflect on a Trump administration?

What shocks me, though, is the fact that people are actually brushing this off. People are turning a blind eye to the problem that is plagiarism in Melania Trump’s speech. They’re ignoring the blatant lies that have been presented to the public. They aren’t taking plagiarism seriously. Plagiarism is illegal and people are pretending that Trump’s speech is okay.

Maybe it’s the writer in me, but I take plagiarism very seriously. Plagiarism is literally stealing–it’s stealing of someone’s intellectual property. Trump has publicly stolen from Michelle Obama, and people need to recognize that, especially when 1 in 3 Americans approve of Donald Trump as our future president.
