Ways to a Happy Heart (Part 2)

A couple months ago, I wrote a blog post about Ways to Keep a Happy Heart, and now I’m back with a part two! For some reason, the inspiration for these posts always comes from the stress I experience through school or my personal life but I am more than happy to find ways to turn my negative thinking into positive and share it with you all.

Drink lots and lots of water.

I have recently begun to track my daily water intake, aiming for eight glasses a day. It is amazing how different you feel when you stop regularly drinking sugary, carbonated beverages and switching to water. Water is almost a natural detox for your body. It never makes you feel bloated, in fact, it helps me digest food better especially when adding lemon. Water also clears your skin, as well as your body from toxens and viruses. Water is basically the power drink and if you’re looking for natural energy and a great feeling physically, I highly sugest upping your water intake and sipping on it throughout the day.

Track your accomplishments.

For some people, a daily to-do list is terrifying, to me, it’s Disney World. To-do lists are essential for productivity and surprisingly helpful in boosting your overall mood. Start the night before, listing items by priority. Don’t list so many things that you cannot, in any human way, accomplish in less than twenty-four hours. Have a lot of things to do? Add some cute cat stickers–it always seems to do the trick for me.

If you write down your goals, you’re more likely to want to get off your butt and get them done. As you finish each one, simply cross it off the list and, at the end of the day, you will be surprised at all your accomplishments for the day. Some days, for me, I dread because of my workload but, as I cross off each item, I feel a little bit better and, when the day is over, realize that I truly can get a lot of stuff done in twenty-four hours. There’s no feeling quite as wonderful as productivity.

Have a “baby.”

No, I most certainly do not mean baby in the literal meaning, but have something that you need to take care of and can love. Whether it’s your cat (me) or a small plant (also me), something that you have to tend to daily and cuddle with at night (who said you can’t cuddle with a plant??) is very rewarding and heart warming. Seeing this thing grow as well helps you to feel more accomplished and fulfilling. Actual babies are very good for this, though they’re not my style.

Change the way you look at things.

There was something I learned in my AP Psychology class las semester that has truly helped me deal with stress. Instead of viewing something as an obstacle, view it as a challenge. For example, you have been given a very important project to do at work that has to be done in a remarkably short amount of time. Instead of stressing out and viewing this project as an enemy, look at it as a new challenge. You’re a badass and you can get it done–you’re in charge of this damn project, anyway. You’re the boss and you can get this done in time and have it looking hella good. This same principle applies to studying strategies, work overload, personal problems and time management. It’s all a mind game and it works.

Find a happy place.

I’m sure you’ve heard of this, but it usually refers to a mental place of happy thoughts, right? I’m talking about a literal, who-what-when-where-why, happy place. A place where you can spend time and, regardless of what you’re doing, thoroughly enjoy your time there as well as be productive. It’s a place where, at times, you can escape from your real-world problems by enjoying a good book or meeting with a friend and, at other times, take your work, seclude yourself, and stay for hours, getting sh*t done. For me, I run away to a little coffee shop called Panacea (which literally means “cure to all illnesses”), where I can get a large French press of Yerba Mate or a Chai Latte, and do whatever I want or need to do.

Surround yourself with happy people.

There is most certainly a thing called a “toxic friend” and you can get rid of them. I have. Multiple times. A toxic friend is usually very negative, maybe even towards you or your other friends. They put you down and don’t make you feel that great most of the time, and you don’t need to hang around them because no friend should feel the need to constantly point out your flaws or mistakes. Your friends should support you and make you feel great, they should give you memories that will last a lifetime. Defriending someone who doesn’t make you feel happy isn’t cruel, it’s a natural remedy that you can turn to when you realize you are sick of their attitude. When you finally rid yourself of toxic people, and surround yoursel with positive people, your attitude will change drastically, but for the better.

These few things, as well as the suggestions I gave in my last post, have truly helped me to live a happier, stress-free life and I hope that you can use them to your improvement as well.
